Located in the west side of Dongbian Gate, Dongcheng District, Beijing Railway Station is a transportation hub in Beijing, even in China. Beijing Railway Station has the longest history among all the railway stations in Beijing. Metro Line No.2 passes the station. There are many buses starting from and passing here, as well as long-distance buses bound for Beijing surrounding areas. There are also some international lines, namely the railway line linking Beijing to Pyongyang, North Korea (DPRK), Moscow, as well as for Inner and Outer Mongolia departing from this station. History of Beijing Railway Station
Beijing Railway Station could dateg back to 1901 (during the Qing dynasty). The station was originally started to build in 1901 and was finished building in 1903. The original site is located at the east of Qianmen, formerly known as "Beijing Qianmen East Railway station". It was called Qianmen Railway Station, Peking stations and station name Peking East Station at that time. On September 30, 1949 it was renamed "Beijing station".
The present site of Beijing Railway Station started to be built on January 20, 1959 and completed on September 10. On September 15, the station was officially put into operation. And the original site was removed. Beijing Railway Station became China's largest passenger railway station at that time. Trains bound for the country from Beijing Railway Station.
The station is the top ten buildings in the capital i8n 1950, when is the 10th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic. It perfectly combined magnificent architecture and rich ethnic style with modern facilities and equipment. The construction speed and the large scale made it a miracle in the Chinese railway construction history. On September 13 and 14 in 1959, Chairman Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai and other central leading comrades visited the station. Chairman Mao Zedong personally inspected the new Beijing station and wrote the station name "Beijing Railway Station".
In June, 2008, the eve of the Beijing Olympic Games, the Beijing Railway Station put up English station name "Beijing Railway Station" for the first time.
Structure of Beijing Railway Station
The total area of Beijing Railway Station is 250,000 square meters, of which the total construction area is 80,000 square meters. The layout of the station is parallel, divided into the departure and arrival area, transfer area and shunting area. Beijing Railway Station is 218 meters wide from east to west, 124 meters deep from north to south. The total area of the square in front of the station is 40,000 square meters. After of reconstruction of Beijing Railway Station, more supporting equipment were built: Beijing Station Hotles, Business Center, coffee shop, the Ministry of Tourism, movies video halls, Xinhua Bookstore, journals books and shops, the second floor viewing platforms, Tupper supermarket, department store counters, commercial street, electron storage cabinets, small pieces of luggage storage, luggage and parcel packing department, Chinese restaurants, fast food restaurants, etc.
