"Lishui Jinsha" is structured as a dance drama with four acts: "Prelude," "Water," "Mountain," and "Emotion." Each act weaves together the distinctive cultural elements of Yunnan's ethnic groups, creating a multi-sensory experience that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.
The show opens with a sequence that introduces the mystical and ancient culture of Lijiang. Through performances such as Dongba blessings, the Snow Mountain Goddess, Tibetan butter churning, and Naxi weaving, this act sets the stage for the cultural journey ahead, highlighting the deep spiritual and historical roots of the region.
The second act focuses on the theme of water, a symbol of purity, civilization, and beauty in the eyes of the Dai people. This section features the elegant water dance, candle boat dance, and finger dance, each offering a unique visual impact. In this act, the performers engage with the audience by splashing water, a traditional Dai custom believed to bring blessings and happiness. The interactive water-splashing brings the audience into the heart of the celebration, with cheers and applause echoing throughout the theater.
The third act showcases the vibrant lifestyles and traditions of the highland ethnic groups. It includes a variety of dances, such as the Naxi "Bangbang Meeting" dance, where performers also portray the "Sacred Crane," a Naxi symbol of longevity and prosperity. Other performances include the Lisu people’s "Pig-Chasing Tune," Tibetan "Weaving Dance," Wa people's "Planting Dance," and Yi people’s "Jumping Dish" dance, all of which vividly depict the daily life and labor of these mountain communities.
The final act, themed around emotion and love, highlights the Mosuo people's unique "walking marriage" tradition and various ethnic festivals like the Torch Festival. The show begins with a beautiful Yi girl in a red dress, followed by young men from the Bai, Tibetan, Lisu, Miao, and Naxi ethnic groups, each using traditional musical instruments to express their love for the Yi girl. Ultimately, a talented Naxi young man wins her heart, and they perform a dance celebrating their union. The act also features the Mosuo people, the world’s only remaining matriarchal society, who reside by Lugu Lake. Their distinctive "walking marriage" custom, where men and women maintain relationships without formal marriage, is portrayed in an artistic and engaging manner. The act concludes with a vibrant Torch Festival dance, a grand celebration involving the Bai, Yi, and Naxi peoples. The stage is filled with colorful dances and symbolic torches, creating a powerful and unforgettable finale.
