Mountain City Alley(山城巷), also known as the Shancheng Lane is the only street lane named after Mountain City in Chongqing. It is a historic and scenic alley reflecting Chongqing's mountain-city identity. It starts from Zhongxing Road in Nanji Gate and ends in Consular Lane. It was built on the mountain, almost entirely composed of steps, which had a unique aesthetic feeling of Mountain City landscape. Mountain City Alley can be traced back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
At the beginning of the last century, the roadway was lit by poles to illuminate the way home for passers-by. Every evening, a street lamp lights up halfway up the mountain in turn, such as the stars in the sky, hence the name Tiandeng Lane and Tiandeng Street.

To get to Eighteen Steps, you can take the Chongqing Railway Transit(CRT) Line 1 or CRT Line 2, and get off at the Jiaochangkou Station. Then you can walk to the Eighteen Steps.
