Spring Dawn at Su Causeway

Located in the side of the West Lake, Spring Dawn at Su Causeway ranks first among ten views of the West Lake in Hangzhou. It is a north-south tree-lined embankment running through the West Lake scenic area.

Structure of Su Causeway
The embankment is south to the foothills of Nanping Mount and north to the Xixia Ridge. The embankment is 300 kilometers long and 36 meters wide. It is built by Su Dongpo, who is a writer and calligrapher in Northern Song Dynasty. In 1089, Su used the mud of the West Lake to build the embankment when he was dredging the lake. There are six stone arch bridges along the embankment, from south to north are the Central Wave Bridge (Yangbo Bridge), Suo Lan Bridge, Wang Shan Bridge, Ya Ti bridge, Dongpu Bridge, Kua Hong Bridge. Su Causeway is named in honor of Su Dongpo, also known as Su Gong Causeway. In the south end of the causeway lies a Su Dongpo Memorial, which shows the life of Su Dongpo and his poems.

For Su causeway connects the North and South hills, it is a major transportation hub in Southern Song Dynasty in the suburb of Hangzhou. Then it gradually developed into a bazaar and a must go place for outings of Hangzhou public. On the both sides of the causeway grows willow, peach, mixed with magnolia, cherry, hibiscus, clover and other ornamental plants. Therefore, it ranks first among ten views of the West Lake for it fantastic and beautiful scenery.

Su Causeway provides visitors with changing touring lines which can take a leisure stroll with impressing view. Walking in the embankment or bridge, scenic view expands like a picture with kinds of style and fancy taste.

Brief Introduction of Su Dongpo
Su Shi (1037 - 1101), also known as Su Dongpo, is a famous writer, one of the Eight Masters of the Tang and Song classical prose. He is knowledgeable and versatile for he has high attainments on calligraphy, painting, poetry, prose. He was good at painting bamboos and rocks. He was also a literary leader at that time; and his poems were magnificent with bold style. He played an important part in the literary area in Song Dynasty.

Travel tips
To reach the south end of Su Causeway, you can take K4, 504, Holiday Line 1, 4, 5, 7, then get off at the "Su Causeway Station" or "Flower Harbor" station, or take the West Lake cruise to Lake Flower Harbor. To reach the north end of Su Causeway, you can take 7, 15, 27, 28, Holiday Line 1, 4, 6 to the "Yuemiao Station" or "Quyuanfenghe Station ".
