Where is Mount Wutai

Mount Wutai, also known as Wutai Mountain or Qingliang Shan, is located in n Taihuai town, Wutai county, Xinzhou city, in Shanxi province, the south of Datong, and the north of Taiyuan. Datong and Dayuan are two biggest cities in Shanxi, with airports. The closest distance from Taiyuan to Mount Wutai is about 195 kilometers, and takes about 2.5 hours by driving. Mount Wutai is close to the border between Shanxi and Hebei province, about 190 kilometers away from Shijiazhuang in Hebei province, a 3.5 hours driving distance. It is a part of Taihang mountain system, and got its from its five peaks and shapes.

Mount Wutai is one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, with 47 Buddhism temples , and one of its temples is often visited by Chinese Emperors. The other three are Mount Jiuhua in Anhui Province, Mount Emei in Sichuan Province and Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province. How to Get to Mount Wutai from Datong

Mount Wutai is in the northeast of Shanxi, the south of Datong, about 230 kilometers away from the city of Datong, and it takes about 4 hours from Datong to Mount Wutain by driving. How to get to Mount Wutai from Datong? For your arrival at Mount Wutai, if you make use of slow transportation, you need to go to Taihuai town first. But if you take a fast and nonstop transportation, you could go to Mount Wutai scenic spot directly.

►Option 1: Train + Bus (Datong-Xinzhou-Wutai-Taihuai)

How to get to Mount Wutai from Datong by train? Trains from Datong to Xinzhou are available, and take from 2 hours to 4.5 hours. The fastest train from Datong to Xinzhou is K7801 which takes about 2 hours (08:30-10:31). Ticket fare is 118.5 yuan for soft sleeper, 78.5 yuan for hard sleeper and 32.5 yuan for hard seat.

From Xinzhou to Mount Wutai, you could take a bus from the bus station close to the Xinzhou Railway Station to Wutai county, then take a bus from Wutai county to Taihuai town. This option takes too much, and I don’t recommend it you. But you could charter a car from Xinzhou to Mount Wutai.

►Option 2: Long Distance Bus (Datong-Mount Wutai Scenic Spot)

How to get to Mount Wutai from Datong by bus? Taking a long distance bus from Datong directly to Mount Wutai is relatively convenient. You could go to Datong Bus Station or Datong Xinnan Bus Station to take a bus. But please note that there is no direct bus from Datong to Mt Wutai from November to March.

From Datong East Bus Station to Mount Wutai, the buses start at 07:30 and 14:00, and take about 3 hours, with a ticket of 75 yuan. If you are at Datong Railway Station, walk to Sanyiyuan(the third hospital) bus stop, take No. 601 and get off at Datong stop, then walk about 150 meters to the bus station. If you are at Datong Yungang Airport, you could take a shuttle airport to Datong Hotel, then take No. 15 public bus to the bus station.

From Datong Xinnan Bus Station to Mount Wutai, the buses start at 8:30 and 14:30, and take about 3 hours, with a ticket of 75 yuan. If you are at Datong Yungang Airport, you could take a shuttle airport to Datong Hotel, then take No. 201 public bus to the Datong Xinnan bus station.

►Option 3: Car Rental(Datong-Mount Wutai Scenic Spot)

Renting a private car with a drive and a tour guide to reach Wutai Mountain Scenic Area is a much more comfortable and flexible way for tourists and visitors. Car rental is expensive but convenient, suitable for a group over three persons. You could rent a car with three seats, four seats or seven seats.
