Known as Shazhou in ancient times, Dunhuang was served as a rest stop for traders as the gateway through which Buddhism, Islam and Christianity entered China. Dunhuang is located at the western end of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province in northwest of China. It is 2000 kilometers west of Beijing, right on the silk road that caravans would take to get from China to the Middle East. It is a small oasis surrounded by high mountain, deserts and the Gobi Desert with Dang River as the city's water supply.

Air :
Dunhuang Airport is located 13 km away from east Dunhuang City. The airport completed construction in 1982. It has flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Xian, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Urumqi, Shanshan, Jiayuguan Pass, etc.. Some of the airlines has charter service.
Dunhuang Airport is not in large scale. There are airport shuttle buses and Taxies to the airport. As the airport is small and not so many flights in a day, there is no fixed departure time of the bus. Once there is a fight arriving or departing, there will be buses to the airport or back from airport. If you take taxi to the airport the price will be about 40 Yuan.
Railway:
Take train from Urumqi, Jiayuguan Pass, Lanzhou, Xian, Yinchuan, Yumen, etc. to Dunhuang, Tourist can get off directly at Dunhuang Railway Station. Dunhuang Railway Station is located at the crossroads of Wenhua Road from Dunhuang downtown to the Mogao Grottoes. It is just about 15 min’s driving from the center of city.
Tourists depart for other cities could also choose to get off at Liuyuan Railway Station, and then take bus to Dunhuang. This railway station is about 120km from Dunhuang Downtown, which is about 2 hrs’ driving. Trains to Shanghai, Beijing, Zhenzhou, Qingdao, Xian, Lanzhou, Jiayuguan, Chengdu, Xinjiang an other cities and provinces all passes this station. Anxi Liuyuan Railway Station has ticket office in Dunhuang, and you can reserve you tickets here. There are public bus in 24 hrs pick up passengers.

Highways:
The national highways 215 and 313 pass through Dunhuang. Except for the road to Yunnanguang, the transports to other attractions are very convenient. There are long-distance bus to Lanzhou, Xian, Urumqi, Kumul, Turpan, Golmud, Jiuquan and Jiayuguan. Along the road between Dunhuang downtown and the Anxi Railway Station, there are long-distance buses and minibus. Otherwise, there are car rental at the Dunhuang Bus Station.
Public Traffic of Dunhuang City
There are public buses, pedicabs and taxies for the urban traffic.
Public Bus:
There are now 4 lines of public bus in Dunhuang; The price is 1 Yuan per person for the normal bus, and 2 Yuan for air-conditioned bus. The buses run between 8:00 and 20:00.

Taxies:
Most of the taxies in Dunhuang do not have meter. Drivers charge for the type of taxi and the distance. There are Santana and Charade taxies here. In the downtown, the price for Santana is 10 Yuan, while Charade is 5 Yuan. As the attractions in Dunhuang are not for from the downtown, tourists could agree on the price with driver or rent a car to get these attractions.
