The original site of Guangzhou Railway Station is located in Dashatou, the southeast corner of Guangzhou. It was formerly known as Dashatou train station, founded in 1911. It was the terminus segment of China Kowloon-Canton Railway.
As early as the 1950s, the provincial government noticed the demand for a core train station in Guangzhou but the programs were shelved till 1974 because of the Cultural Revolution. On the 4th of April, 1979 with the normalisation of relationships with Hong Kong, the through-train program which was revoked for more than 25 years was started again. Through-train services were changed to Guangzhou East in 1996 because of the growing safety issues the train station was going through.
