Haikou Climate & Weather

Hainan is the second largest island off the Chinese mainland, the largest being Taiwan. Hainan is the more southerly of the two and is nearer to the mainland, separated only by narrow straights. Hainan has a tropical moist monsoonal climate. Its annual temperature variation is less than 15 degrees Celsius.

The provincial capital city of Haikou is on the northern edge of the torrid zone, and is part of the monsoon tropical zone. Haikou’s Spring is warm with almost drought conditions, but the high temperatures in Summer bring heavy rain in their wake.  As high temperatures warm the waters of the South China Sea from June to September tropical storms, known here as typhoons, are driven toward the coast and Haikou can experience force 8 storms that cause considerable problems for traffic. It can feel quite cold in Winter by contrast.  Annual Average temperature is 17-23°C.

As a rule, the best time to travel here is between November and the following April.
