How to Get to Zhangye from Jiayuguan

Zhangye is a prefecture-level city in northwest-central Gansu province, China, bordering Inner Mongolia to the north and Qinghai to the south. Zhangye lies in the center of the Hexi Corridor and was also an important section of the ancient Silk Road. Zhangye is famed for its long history, splendid culture, beautiful natural scenery and unique human landscape. Jiayuguan, known as “the first pass in China”, is located in northwestern Gansu province, China, where is the starting point of the west end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. Jiayuguan Pass, the largest and most intact pass of the Great Wall of China, was the traffic fortress of the ancient "Silk Road" and one of the three great wonders (Shanhai Pass, Beitai Town and Jiayu Pass) of the Great Wall of China. Jiayuguan is also a world cultural heritage.

Zhangye is about 224 kilometers away from Jiayuguan. The transport from Jiayuguan to Zhangye is quite convenient. Travelers can take either train or coach to travel between the two places.

By Train(Highly Recommended)

Taking the train is the cheapest and most convenient way to get to Zhangye from Jiayuguan and takes less time than taking the coach. There are many trains between Jiayuguan and Zhangye every day. One can get on the train at Jiayuguan Train Station(嘉峪关站) and get off at Zhangye Train Station(张掖站). It takes 2 to 3 hours for the whole trip, depending on different train. The earliest train departs at 00:05 am and the last departs at 11:34pm with the durations vary from 1h12m to 4h4m. Below is a timetable for some trains from Jiayuguan to Zhangye.

Note: If you take the D-series bullet train, you should get on at the Jiayuguan Nan Station.

Before you buy the train ticket, you should check the train schedule first and then decide which train to take. It is no doubt one of the fastest and the cheapest way for the transfer between two places. We strongly recommend you travel Zhangye by train.

By Coach

Also, one can travel Zhangye by coach. There are a lot of coaches leaving for Zhangye from Jiayuguan Bus Station(嘉峪关长途汽车站). It takes about 3 to 4hours for the whole trip and the ticket fare is about 53 RMB. You can take the direct coach, or you can hop on a coach leaving for Lanzhou from Jiayuguan and ask the driver to drop you off at Zhangye.

By Car Rental

Car rental may be a flexible way for your transfer. You can also rent a private car with a tour guide and a driver from a local travel agency to take you to Zhangye from Jiayuguan. But it is quite expensive. It is recommended to book in advance, so that you can get on the car based on your schedule.
