Must-Visit Attractions in Yubeng

Yubeng's attractions might not be numerous, but each one typically requires a hike to reach, given the high-altitude environment. This makes the journey a physical challenge. Key destinations such as the Sacred Waterfall, Ice Lake, and Upper and Lower Yubeng are must-sees for every visitor. Additionally, depending on your physical condition, you can explore other sites like the pastures and Sacred Lake.

1. Sacred Waterfall (Chinese name: 神瀑 Shenpu)

The Sacred Waterfall is fed by meltwater from Kawagarbo Snow Mountain, often referred to as holy water. It is a pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. Bathing under the Sacred Waterfall is considered a purification ritual, believed to cleanse the soul of sins. According to Tibetan tradition, walking clockwise around the waterfall three times is said to purify the mind and soul.

Tips for Visiting the Sacred Waterfall:
Proper Ritual: Start by walking clockwise around the white stupa in Yubeng Village ten times before heading to the waterfall. Walk three times clockwise around the waterfall, collect holy water from a nearby spring, and place a small stone in your water bottle. Remember, do not wear a hat during this ritual.
Respect Local Customs: Avoid smoking near the waterfall and refrain from inappropriate behavior near prayer flags or mani stones. Respect the local customs and maintain silence.

Currently, Yubeng is not a fully developed "self-guided" tourist area. The paths can be challenging, and phone signals are often weak, making it easy to get lost. It's advisable to join a guided tour.

2. Xiaonong Base Camp (Chinese name: 笑农大本营 Xiaonong Dabenying)

Xiaonong Base Camp is situated on the way from Upper Yubeng Village to Ice Lake, at an altitude of 3,900 meters. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers, it's the only rest stop on the way to and from Ice Lake and the Sacred Waterfall. Here, you can buy instant noodles, drinks and other essentials from locals.

This base camp was originally used by the Sino-Japanese mountaineering team as they attempted to climb Kawagarbo Mountain. After mountaineering was banned in Meili, the base camp has since served as a supply station.

Tips for Xiaonong Base Camp:
Limited Supplies: The base camp is a simple wooden hut, the only place to get hot food. However, the food is basic and expensive, with prices ranging from 20 to 30 yuan.

3. Ice Lake (Chinese name: 冰湖 Binghu)

Ice Lake is located at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters, making it the highest point accessible during a regular visit to Yubeng. The lake is a typical glacial lake, formed by glacial erosion. Above the lake, snow-capped mountains reach towards the sky, while glaciers extend down to the lake's edge, creating a stunning and majestic scene. The emerald green waters of the Ice Lake add a splash of color to this icy world, shining like a jewel.

Tips for Ice Lake:
Timing: If you haven't reached the base camp by 1 PM, it's advisable not to proceed to the Ice Lake due to safety concerns as it gets dark early.

4. Sacred Lake (Chinese name: 神湖 Shenhu)

Sacred Lake is located at the foot of Goddess Peak (Meili Snow Mountain), at an altitude of 4,600 meters. It is often called "Meili's Tears." However, due to its hidden location deep within the mountains and its remoteness, few people are aware of it, and even fewer visit. This sacred place is primarily known to local Tibetans, making it a rare sight for outsiders.

Reaching Sacred Lake from Lower Yubeng requires a hike of about 19 kilometers, demanding both physical strength and determination. Since the trail is undeveloped and lacks signs, it's essential to have an experienced local guide. Additionally, the journey is long, so you'll need to bring enough food and prepare for camping on the mountain. A tent and sleeping bag are recommended, and you can spend the night in the cowshed at Cuoka Pasture.

Tips for Visiting Sacred Lake:

  1. Finding the Trail: Near the entrance to Lower Yubeng Village, where the road leads to Ninong, you'll see a sign pointing to a small mountain path labeled "Sacred Lake." This is where the journey begins.
  2. Trail Stages:
  3. Climbing Stage: The initial part of the hike involves ascending through dense bamboo forests. As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes, with shrubs gradually replacing the bamboo. When the bamboo becomes sparse, you're nearing the top.
  4. Ridge Stage: The narrow mountain path can only accommodate one foot at a time, so proceed with caution.
  5. Mountain Pass Stage: You must cross three mountain passes, and after each one, you'll encounter another valley. Once you've crossed all three, you'll finally see Sacred Lake.
  6. Final Stretch: Upon reaching the lake, crouch down so that your line of sight is level with the water's surface, then turn your head 90 degrees to the right to discover the lake's secret. If time allows and you still have energy, you can continue to climb the surrounding hills for a bird's-eye view of Sacred Lake. If it's already past noon, it's best to descend quickly, as there are no lights along the path.

5. Upper Yubeng Village (Chinese name: 上雨崩村 Shang Yubengcun)

Upper Yubeng Village is a great place to rest and recharge. It serves as the "CBD" of Yubeng area, where you can enjoy milk tea, coffee, burgers, and even visit bars for drinks and karaoke. Upper Yubeng is also the gateway to Ice Lake, making it a crucial hub for visitors.

Tips for Upper Yubeng Village:
Access: The village can only be reached by trekking or by taking a local off-road vehicle. The vehicle can accommodate up to five passengers, and it departs once full.

6. Lower Yubeng Village (Chinese name: 下雨崩村 Xia Yubengcun)

Lower Yubeng Village features a small pond where you can capture reflections of Wuguan Peak and Goddess Peak. The village is about 1 kilometer from Upper Yubeng, a 30-minute walk away. The sound of flowing water and the backdrop of snow-capped mountains make this a must-visit spot. Lower Yubeng is also the starting point for the trek to the Sacred Waterfall.

Lower Yubeng is nestled in a quiet valley, surrounded by mountains, giving it a peaceful, almost paradisiacal feel. The village is dotted with many guesthouses, all with beautiful exteriors.
