Mount Everest, the main peak of the Himalayas and the highest mountain in the world, is located on the border between China and Nepal. Its northern part lies in Dingri County, Tibet, China, while the southern one is in Nepal and known as Sagarmatha.
The Base Camp refers to the live zone set up to protect the Everest core environment. It is situated in 5,200 meters above sea level, about 19 km with the linear distance of Mt. Everest and a national AAAAA tourist area.
Shigatse is approximately 354 km from Everest Base Camp and the transport from Shigatse to Mount Everest Base Camp is not quite convenient. In Shigatse, passengers can join group tour or charter car to go directly to the Mount Everest Base Camp. Or take the shuttle bus to Tingri first and then think of ways from Tingri to Mount Everest Base Camp, but this is a bit frustrating.
Join a tour group is the best way to get to Mount Everest base camp from Shigatse. Shigatze is a small city, there are not so many travel agencies and the price will be higher than the price in Lhasa. In order to protect your own legitimate rights and interests, make sure you sign a formal travel contract with the local travel agency when you join the group.
So far, there are no shuttle buses direct from Shigatse to Mount Everest Base Camp. The most convenient and direct way is charter a car to there. But you should know that Shigatse is just a small city, there are not enough type of cars for you to select. Most of them are minibus, only a few SUV. The price is a little expensive, almost close to the price of chartering a bus directly from Lhasa to Mount Everest. (Note: when renting a car, please don’t rent an unlicensed “black car”. Although the price is cheap, it cannot protect your safety and rights.)
There are minibuses and motorcycles that can be rented to Everest Base Camp. However, it is not recommended to rent a motorbike, as the road is bumpy and it is not safe to drive a motorbike. You need pay 1000 RMB for back and forth to rent a car. In Tingri, you can also choose to get a free ride to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp, but generally the vehicles are full. It is a bit difficult to catch a free ride to the base camp.
