Shigatse Transport

Shigatse is Tibet's transportation center. The highways here lead to all directions. Tourists can travel to Shigatse both by Highway and by air.



There are two main highways – China-from Shigatse to Lhasa, Shiquanhe and Nepal. It is also connecting with its 17 counties, and forming complete transportation network. Due to the geography and environment, the local transport is mainly regular buses and bus chartering.

Air

Shigatse Heping Airport is stopping using now, so tourists should take flight to Lhasa Gonggar Airport first and then take bus from Lhasa to Shigatse. Or take regular bus from the airport directly to Shigatse. The distance from Gonggar Airport o Shigatse is about 400km, taking about 4 hrs.

Highway

Shigatse is the transportation center in Tibet. 318 State Road, Riya Highway (Shigatse - Yadong), Lapu (Lhasa - Pulan) highway and China Nepal Friendship Highway (China -Nepal) link all directions.

Shigatse Bus Terminal is located at Jiefang Zhong Road, opposite to the Shanghai Plaza. In Lhasa, there are regular buses to Shigatse every day, departing every 30 minutes, charging 65 Yuan per person.There are also long-distance buses to each county, such as Yadong, Jiangzi, Lazi, Sakya, etc.

From Shigatse to Each County

Gyantse Transport: There are minibuses outside Shigatse Jiefang Zhong Road Bus Station to Gyantse. The distance is 77km, driving for 2 hrs, price around 12 Yuan.

Sakya Transport: There are buses from Shigatse Bus Station to Sakya at around 7:30 am - 8:00 am, driving about 5 hours, and the fare is 27 Yuan. The regular bus will return at the next day from the Sakya.

Tingri Transport: There is no direct bus from Shigatse to New Tingri. You can take minibus can to Lhatse first, and than find bus to Tingri. The fare is about 40 Yuan. From New Tingri to Rongbuk, or Everest base camp, there is no bus, and it is recommended to charter bus in Lhasa or Shigatse.

Nyalam Transport: from Nyalam to Zhangmu, there are buses picking arriving passengers through here. It is usually in the morning before 10:00, you can catch a ride.

Lhatse Transportation: At the west of Tashilhunpo Monastery Square, there are minibuses to Lhatse every morning, and the fare is 30 yuan.

Zhangmu Transport: Shigatse to Zhangmu has occasional regular buses, and you should ask in advance. It generally starts at 9 am, riding for two days, overnight stop in Tingri, and the fare is about 70 Yuan. Zhangmu and Friendship Bridge is only 8 km away, you can ride to there for about 15 Yuan
