Hukou Waterfall is located at the intersection of Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province, 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Yichuan County of Yan'an City, some 400 kilometers (249 miles) to the northeast of Xi'an, 165 km to the west of Fenxi City and about 400km from Taiyuan City. Kukou waterfall is the largest yellow waterfall in the world and the second largest waterfall in China (after the Huangguoshu Waterfall).
The transport from Taiyuan to Hukou waterfall is not so convenient, for there is no direct train or bus from Taiyuan to Hukou Waterfall. So, one has to get there from Taiyuan via other places. Travelers can take either bus or train to travel between the two places. This article is going to introduce the transportation from Taiyuan to Hukou waterfall.
Get to the waterfall from Taiyuan via Yan'an(延安): one can take a train from Taiyuan to arrive at Yan'an Train Station. There are 5 trains depart for Yan’an every day. The earliest train leave at 09:32 am and last departs at 11:21 pm, with the durations vary from 4h46m to 6h7m. Then transfer to a bus at Yan'an South Bus Station (near to the Yan'an Train Station) to get directly to the waterfall area. The bus fare is about 50 RMB. There are a couple of buses there and it takes about 3 hours to take you the waterfall area from Yan'an South Bus Station.
Get to the waterfall from Taiyuan via Linfen(临汾): No train directly reach to Jixian county of Hukou waterfall. One can take a bullet train or high speed train from Taiyuan to Linfen Train West Station(临汾西火车站) first. There are 44 trains depart for Linfen every day. The earliest train departs at 03:38 am and last departs at 11:15 pm, with the durations vary from 1h9m to 4h20m. The ticket fare of first class seat is 115 RMB and the second-class seat is 72 RMB.
After you get out of the Linfen West Station, you are able to take Bus No. 11 or take taxi to Yaomiao Bus Station(临汾尧庙汽车站). You will find there are many buses leaving for Jixian County and it takes 3 hours. The bus fare is about 36 RMB. Upon your arrival at Jixian Country, change the local minivan and the it takes about one hour to reach the waterfall area.

Best time to visit: The period from April to May and the period from September to November are the best time to visit the waterfall. Hukou Waterfall is abundant and of great momentum which makes it a spectacular sight during these two periods. July and August are a little too hot and humid.
