Tibet Weather in Autumn

Tibet’s autumn is very unique. It does not just mean a simple golden autumn. It is more like a rainbow after the rain in the fog - with seven-color lights, fresh and bright, distant and mysterious.

Tibet Weather in Autumn

Each year, from September to November is Tibet’s fall. The weather in autumn is cool but dry.
 
The fall in Tibet is like a fairy tale world. Many travelers will choose autumn for traveling to Tibet. Most of the days in autumn here are with blue skies, little rain but dry air. Morning and night are with slightly lower temperatures and there is large temperature difference between day and night. Remember to buy some thick clothes, do not catch a cold. Tibet’s autumn also has strong ultraviolet rays. In October, the weather will be just like the weather in winter. High wind is mainly distributing at Nagri, Nagqu and Chamdo. 
 
Shigatse’s Mount Everest is a good place to watch the Jinshan Sunshine. Nyingchi’s woodlands are covered with red, yellow, blue, green and purple colors. As a matter of fact, Nyingchi’s autumn is the most colorful season in Tibet, due to the low altitude than other places in Tibet and the lush vegetation, it is known as "River South in Tibet."

What to Wear in Autumn

1. Travel to Tibet in summer or autumn, you can dress according to North China’s dressing in autumn. Since the larger temperature difference between day and night, the weather in the morning and evening is chill, just like winter; midday endures sun baking.
 
2. In Lhasa, Nyingchi, Shannan, theses prefectures, the weather in daytime is comfortable, you can just wear normal clothes and long johns. You can also bring a sweater if you feel cold so that you can put on when you can't stand it. In the morning and night, putting on a thick coat is enough to prevent from getting cold. For shoes, you can wear outdoor shoes.
 
3. If you travel to Nagqu and Nagri, where are with lower temperature, you’d better take jacket, thick sweater, ski-wear or other clothes with good heat retention property.
 
4. To Namsto or Mount Everest, the temperature at night will fall to a few degrees which may be below zero. Do not forget to take jacket and thick sweater. It's even cold at daytime, thus you’d better not stay there over night.

Tips for Traveling in Autumn

1. Tibet’s autumn is dry, pay attention to skin moisturizer. You can eat more fruits and drink plenty of water.
 
2. The temperature is low in the morning and at night, pay attention to the weather change, add clothing and quilt.
 
3. Traveling to Tibet in fall is easier to cause altitude sickness than September and August (oxygen content less). Remember to prepare well for preventing high altitude sickness.
 
4. If you travel to Tibet during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, the train tickets and admission ticket for Potala Palace will be very intense, you’d better book in advance. And so do the hotels. The best way is to avoid those crowded seasons.
 
 
Autumn is relatively a good season for traveling to Tibet. The scenery here is very beautiful and as it is not the peak season, the price should be much cheaper than traveling in summer.
