Wuhan Climate & Weather

Briefing
Wuhan, sprawled in the subtropical moist monsoon climate zone, has abundant rainfall and four distinct seasons. Spring and Autumn each last for almost 60 days.  Winter in Wuhan is very cold and although the temperature is not as low as in some northern cities, the wind-chill from river winds and the high humidity makes it feel ten degrees colder, temperatures can drop to -5°C but heavy snowfall is uncommon.  Summer is very hot and humid, continuing for about 130 days with temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F). While this may not seem excessively hot, there is high humidity.  So Wuhan well deserves its reputation as one of China's three Summer "furnace cities"; the other’s being Chongqing and Nanjing.

Wuhan weather tips
Most rain falls in June and July and Wuhan receives about 200mm of precipitation annually.

The average high in July and August is 32°C or 91°F, though temperatures do reach 35°C or 95°F at the height of summer and sizzling heat waves force many residents to stay indoors. Swimming in the lake and rivers is a popular sport and pastime in Summer.  Carry an umbrella in Wuhan, for shelter from both the heat of the sun, and from the frequent rain.

In December and January, the average temperatures are about 2° to 4°C. It snows several times a year. Unlike northern cities, most homes in Wuhan do not have heaters or fireplaces, and except for some 5 star hotels, few buildings have indoor heating so remember to bring gloves, thick scarf and warm overcoat when travelling in Wuhan in Winter.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit are probably Spring (April to mid-June) and Autumn (late September to mid-November). The cherry blossoms are in full bloom in April and Wuhan is a famous place to enjoy this beautiful scenery. Rainfall is particularly low in September and November.
