The capital city of Guangxi, Nanning is an important gateway city for Southeast Asian travelers to China. Many of them fly or take train to Nanning first, and make an extension tour to other parts of Guangxi or beyond. Some people like to get to Pingxiang by a road trip, and have an in-depth Guangxi tour by visiting Mingshi Scenic Area, Detian Waterfall, Tongling Grand Canyon, and then make their way to Zhangjiajie, by making a transfer in Nanning.
In Southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (a neighboring province of Hunan where Zhangjiajie is located in), Nanning is approximately 1000km away from Zhangjiajie. The two destinations have been connected by trains and long-distance buses. However, you are not encouraged to travel to Zhangjiajie from Nanning by bus, as they are geographically too far, with many dangerous winding mountain roads.
Currently, there is not bullet train available from Nanning to Zhangjiajie. Still the conventional trains will take you to get to the destination safely and quickly. You have two options, train K748 departs at 17:20 and arrives at 08:16 of the next day. Train T282 departs at 20:02 and arrives at 10:06 of the next day. So you will have to stay overnight at train, anyway.
Option 1: K748, with traveling time of 14 hours and 56 minutes
Option 2: T282, with traveling time of 14 hours and 4 minutes
