Hainan is particularly worth visiting. Over more than 20 years, Hainan has been the place with the most convenient visa-free entry policy in China. As China’s southernmost tropical island, Hainan attracts numerous foreign tourists and vacationers for its unique natural and cultural sights. The visa-free entry policy of Hainan has been upgraded since February 9, 2024. Foreigners do not need a visa to travel, do business, visit, visit relatives, receive medical care, or participate in meetings, exhibitions, and sporting events in Hainan.

Visa-free entry to Hainan is available to citizens of many countries. When Hainan’s visa-free entry policy was first introduced, it applied to citizens of just 21 countries. This has now been extended to 59 countries. Almost a quarter of the world’s population can now visit Hainan without needing to obtain a visa.

It is more convenient to visit Hainan
Foreign nationals holding a regular passport form the 59 eligible countries can arrive at any of Hainan’s open border checkpoints from any third country or region at any time.
Since February 9th, 2024, citizens of 59 countries can enter Hainan Province for commercial activities and trade, visit and exchange, and family reunions, receiving medical treatment, attending exhibitions, taking part in sporting events and other needs(excluding long-term working and studying) for up to 30 days without a visa. Foreign nationals who need to enter Hainan for the aforementioned purposes can enter through any open port in the province and remain in the province's administrative area during their stay periods (subject to the relevant provisions if applicable to a mutual visa exemption agreements signed with China). Each entry period is calculated from 00:00 on the day following the day of entry. The existing policy of 30-day visa-free trips to Hainan for citizens of the aforementioned countries remains in effect.

In December, 2024, Hainan Province is eligible for the 240-hour visa-free transit entry policy of China. Haikou Meilan International Airport and Sanya Phoenix International Airport are added to the entry ports of the 240-hour visa-free transit entry policy of China. Individuals from 54 eligible countries, including Russia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada, traveling from China to a third country(region), can enter visa-free through any of the 60 open ports in 24 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities), and stay within the allowed areas for visa-free transit travelers for no more than 240 hours.
Foreign tourist group consisting of two individuals or more arriving on a cruise ship for a trip organized and handled by a Chinese travel agency may enter as a whole into China without visas at one of the cruise ports located in the 13 following cities: Tianjin, Dalian(Liaoning Province), Shanghai, Lianyungang(Jiangsu Province), Wenzhou and Zhoushan(Zhejiang Province), Xiamen(Fujian Province), Qingdao(Shandong Province), Guangzhou and Shenzhen(Guangdong Province), Beihai(Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), and Haikou and Sanya(Hainan Province). All foreign tourist groups under this circumstance are obliged to continue their journey to the next scheduled port and depart from China by the same cruise ship as scheduled. Visitors may remain in China for a maximum of 15 days. In addition, foreign tourist groups are permitted to travel within the coastal provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) and Beijing.
From July 30, 2024, any individual holding an ordinary passport from a country having diplomatic relations with China can enter Hainan Province visa-free for no more than 144 hours after arriving in Hong Kong and Macao and travel in Hainan through a tourist group organized by a travel agency that is legally registered in either of the two SARs and consists of at least two person. They can enter and leave Hainan Province from all open ports of Hainan, and the tourist group must enter and leave Hainan as a whole. The time is counted from 0: 00 the next day after entry.
