Hi, I'm planning to visit Tibet by train from Chengdu and then enter Nepal to go to Kathmandu by land transportation. Questions: 1. How to get a Tibet permit/visa? How long does it take to get the permit? 2. I would like to visit Lhasa and Shigatse. Is it compulsory to hire a guide in both cities? 3. Are there any public buses from Shigatse to Zhangmu, near the Nepal border? Thank you for your help.

With valid Tibet Travel Permit, foreign visitors can visit Tibet. Please note that foreign visitors with Tibet Travel Permit can not travel alone in Tibet. To visit Tibet, you should be accompanied with guide and driver.

How to Get Tibet Travel Permit

It is recommended that foreign visitors who want to enter Tibet reserve the tour with travel agency, and the travel agency in China can help you apply the Tibet Permit/Tibet Visa.

Materials Needed for Tibet Permit

Passport is needed to apply for Tibet Permit for foreign visitors. And you should apply to the tourism administrative bureau in Tibet at least 15 days before your entry. Clear scanning copy of your Chinese visa and passport is needed.
