Hello, We are planning a tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu with tour to Mt. Everest Camp Base. I am worry about the altitude sick. I am considering whether it is better from Lhasa to Kathmandu or from Kathmandu to Lhasa for acclimatization. Could you please advise? Thank you very much.

Dear David,

Greetings from Sophie, Top China Travel!
Thank you very much for your enquiry.
When you arrive in China, I guess you will arrive at Beijing or Shanghai. Then will have at least one night stay for jet-lag. In this case, because you can not fly to Lhasa for overseas cities directly, except Kathmandu. When you arrive at Beijing or Shanghai, you need to get the Tibet permit which is applied before you arrive in China.

I suggest you fly to Xinning and for overnight in Xining for one night or have 1-2 days tour surrounding Xining. Then take a train from Xining to Lhasa. Choosing Xining as the transit city because A: it is easier to by train ticket to Lhasa than other cities. B: It is nearer to Tibet and it will not take a long time on the train. It is around 24 hours from Xining to Lhasa by train. C: The altitude from Xining ( 2300-2600meters) to Lhasa will be higher and higher. It will be helpful for you to adapt to the high altitude slowly.

When you arrive at Lhasa, you will often have 2-3 days tours in or near Lhasa. It will be helpful for you acclimatize the altitude in Lhasa

Then the tour from Lhasa to Mt. Everest Camp Base will from Lhasa to Shigatse, Tingri and the ECB from lower altitude to the higher altitude. In this case, people will not feel very sick. But you need to keep fit before you arrive in Tibet.

According to my experience, many of our clients from young people to senior do not have serious altitude sick, although they take flight from Beijing, Xian or Shanghai to Lhasa.

PS: I do suggest you arrange the tour through travel agency as you can not arrange it and apply for Tibet permit on your own. Please avoid every March when you plan your Tibet tour.
