Dear Ana,
Thanks for your attention and your questions as the above.
We are delighted to advise what goods to trade on the
Ancient Silk Road as below,
The goods traded on the Silk Road are basically from the East to the West at the beginning. Just like the name of the road “ Silk Road”, silk is the main commodity in the goods list, because silk is light, compact, in enormous demand as well as at high price. It becomes the ideal good for a long-distance transportation and trade.
At the very beginning time after Silk Road developed, Chinese people carried Arabian horses, Lucerne, grape, carrot, ect into China after their trade trip on the silk road. Later Chinese caravans discovered and brought back other agricultural crops – string beans, onions, cucumbers, pomegranates, figs etc. after each transportation trip from silk road.
With more and more communication, traders in Central Asia and East Mediterranean started their business with Chinese merchant throught Silk Road. They brought various woolen goods, carpets, curtains, blankets and rugs to China, as they were deeply impressed when they realized that Chinese people were unfamiliar with methods wool and flax processing, carpet manufacture and weaving. Parthian tapestries and carpets were highly appreciated in Ancient China.
Besides, Central Asia exported camels, military equipment, gold and silver, semi-precious stones and glass items to China. Camels were highly appreciated in China. The glass from Samarkand was especially valued due to its high quality. It was considered as luxury goods. Other goods traded to China were skins, wool, cotton fabrics, gold embroidery, exotic fruits – water-melons, melons and peaches; fat-tailed sheep and hunting dogs, leopards and lions.
Chinese caravans also exported many Chinese goods to other countries, such as the well-known Chinese china, snow-white vases, bowls, glasses and dishes with graceful patterns. Since it is unique from China, it was very expensive, but popular in European markets. Bronze and iron ornaments, ornate bronze mirrors, umbrellas, products from the well-known Chinese varnish, medicines, and perfumery were also in large demand in ancient European market. Chinese paper, as one of the most remarkable inventions, was highly appreciated too. Merchants also carried tea and rice, woolen and flax fabrics, gold, skin, ect.
Hope the above is clear and helpful.
Best regards
