Dear Amir,
Greetings from Top China Travel!
Thank you very much for your questions.
Yes, Tianshan is really very beautiful. Mt. Tianshan divide Xinjiang as North Xinjiang and South Xinjiang. The nearest place you could see Tianshan and Tianchi is Urumqi, which is the capital of Xingjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Since there are few international flights to Urumqi, you will need to fly to some gateway city in China first, then change flight or train to Urumqi. For example, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Wuhan, ect have flights between Urumqi. Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, ect have overnight trains between Urumqi.
Regarding the traveling season. Generally speaking, the best season to Xinjiang is from April to October. If it is earlier or later, it will be a cold. Therefore, the end of Spring and the beginning or Winter will be suitable. It depends on your time. April is suitable for travel to Southern Area of Mt. Tianshan, May, Juna and July is suitable for visiting to grassland, pasture, flowers in the middle of Mt. Tianshan. July and August is good season for climbing and trekking. August is also suitable for Turpan Area and the grapes and fruits harvest in this season. If you travel in September and October, it is better to travel to North Xinjiang, such as Kanas Lake area, golden birch forests, red populus tremula, ect.
Since Xinjiang is a minority and remote area, there will be great language barrier and culture shock. Besides, Xinjiang is also a Muslim region in China. If possible, I suggest you could join in a local tour with local guide service to avoid any problems which might be caused suring self-tour.
Except Mt. Tianshan and Tianchi Lake, Xinjing Regional Museum can not be missed. Besides, if you are interested in culture, you could choose to visit to Turpan, which is not far from Urumqi. It needs around 3 hours driving from Urumqi to Turpan. If your time is enough, you could choose to round-way fly to Kashigar, where you could find interesting local bazaar and drive along Karakorum Highway to visit Karakul Lake, which will leave you deeply impression.
