Where is Hukou Waterfall?

Hukou Waterfall (壶口瀑布) is located at the intersection of Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province, 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Yichuan County of Yan’an City, some 400 kilometers (249 miles) to the northeast of Xi'an, 165 km to the west of Fenxi City and about 400km from Taiyuan City. This water fall is the only yellow waterfall in the world and the second largest waterfall in China (after the Huangguoshu Waterfall 黄果树瀑布).

How to Hukou Waterfall from Xi'an

There are a couple of ways for visitors to get to Hukou Waterfall from Xi'an, you can get to Hukou waterful from xian by bus, by train or by car rental.

► By Highspeed Train to Yan'an City First

Get to the waterfall from Xi'an via Yan'an(延安). One can take a train from Xi'an to arrive at Yan'an Train Station, which takes about 2 hours. The train ticket fare is CNY95.5 for second class seat and CNY135.5 for first class seat. Then transfer to a bus at Yan'an South Bus Station--延安汽车南站 (near to the Yan'an Train Station) to get directly to the waterfall scenic area. There are a couple of buses every day and it takes about 3 hours to take you the waterfall from Yan'an South Bus Station.

► By Bus

There are 3 direct buses leaving for Hukou from Xi'an Bus Station (西安汽车站). They depart at 6:20,6:30 a.m every day. It takes about 5 hours.The ticket fare is about CNY300.
There is 1 direct bus leaving for Hukou from Xi'an Cheng Bei Bus Station (西安城北客运站). It departs at 12:00 every day. It takes about 5 hours.The ticket fare is about CNY120.

Travel Tips

The period from April to May and the period from September to November are the best time to visit the waterfall. Hukou Waterfall is abundant and of great momentum which makes it a spectacular sight during these two periods. July and August are a little to hot and humid. Hukou Waterfalls can be viewed either from Shaanxi side or Shanxi side since Yellow River is a border river dividing Shaanxi Province and Shanxi Province.
